US Banking Holidays & How They Affect Payment Processing

Prev Next

What Are Banking Holidays?

Banking holidays are dates when U.S. banks and financial institutions are closed and do not process financial transactions. Because payments made in Procare’s payment processor, Tuition Express payments rely on the banking network to settle funds. Payment timelines may be impacted when a banking holiday falls on or near your scheduled processing date.

Payments may still be initiated on holidays and weekends; however, processing does not begin until the next banking business day.

Yearly Banking Holidays

Please note that on the holidays below, standard banking operations may be limited or unavailable. While you can still submit payments, they may not process until the next banking day.

Why Does This Matter?

When banks are closed, certain payment activities are temporarily paused. This can affect how quickly payments are processed, posted, or settled. Below are some common impacts you might notice:

Potential Impacts on Payments

  • Delayed processing: Payments initiated on or just before a banking holiday may take longer to complete than usual.

  • Settlement timing: Funds may not settle in your bank account until after the holiday.

  • Bank-dependent delays: Different banks may resume activity at different times on the next business day.

What You Can Expect

  • Autopay will be submitted as usual on a banking holiday, but the processing may occur on the next business day.

  • Real-time payment requests may still be submitted, but settlement times will depend on your bank and payment method.

  • Credit/Debit charges may show on family statements, accounts, and ledgers during the holiday period, but the processing date might reflect the next business day.

Tips for Planning Around Banking Holidays

  • Request payments early when possible, especially around peak holiday seasons.

  • Check with your bank for specific cutoff times or policies related to holidays.

  • Review your Bank Account Activity Report if you are unsure that a payment has been processed.
